People need glasses because their eyes have been damaged or are out of focus. The most common problems that occur with the eyes are Myopia or Shortsightedness and Hyperopia or longsightedness, Myopia causes near vision to be blurred and distant objects to be clear. Stabismus or Heterotropia is where one eye is fixed on one object and the other eye is fixed on another object.

Most cases happen to children under four years old. These are some of the causes in Ambloypia. Back to Top Amblypia Amblypia is the term used to describe an uncorrectable loss of vision. A child's eye is fully developed between ages 9-11 yrs.

If the problem is caught early it is easier to fix. If it is caught after the age of 11 it is difficult to train the brain to use the eye normally. Signs of Ambloypia are: poor vision, squinting or closing one eye while reading or watching television. You can treat Amblypia by putting a patch over the strong eye so that the weaker eye is forced to be used. But, the earlier it is stopped the better.

Some of the uncommon diseases with the eye are: Corneal Dystrophy, Belepharitis and Ptosis. Back to Top Corneal Dystrophy Corneal Dystrophy is an inherited condition which affects the inner layer of the Cornea. Once the cells have been lost they don't grow back, instead they spread out to fill empty spaces. Some signs of Corneal Dystrophy are: hazy vision and glare when looking at lights.

Blepharitis is a problem which affects the eyelids. It usually causes burning, itching and irratation of the eyelids. Some signs of Blepharitis are: sandy, itchy eyes, red and /or swollen eyelids, flaky skin on the eyelids and dandruff. To control Blepharitis keep the eyelids and eyelashes clean. Back to Top Ptosis Ptosis (pronounced toe 'sis) may occur by: disease, injury, birth, eye surgery and age. In most cases it is caused by a weakness of the the levator Muscle (the muscle that raises the eyelid). Signs of Ptosis are: Drooping eyelids, double vision and one closed eye. Ptosis does not improve with time. It usually requires surgery.
